Lead Mechanical Engineer

Easily the most exciting opportunity in the appliance industry! Plum is transforming the $300 Billion wine industry from the bottle to the glass, in the same way Nespresso and Keurig took coffee from the pot to the cup. The first appliance to transform any wine bottle into automated wine-by-the-glass in luxury hotels and consumer homes, it combines winery-grade wine preservation, integrated refrigeration, artificial intelligence, and a virtual sommelier.

You can find Plum in the guest rooms of luxury hotels like Four Seasons Hotels, and Carneros Inn, in retailers like Williams-Sonoma, Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s, and in more than 300 kitchen appliance dealers across the US, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

This is an incredible role for some who has reached a point in their career where they are ready to own a product end-to-end. You will be responsible for leading the design and validation of our refrigeration system, and overall system design. You should have past experience designing refrigeration/cooling systems at high volume, preferably with the use of thermoelectric cooling.

The Lead Mechanical Engineer will be well versed in CREO/Pro-Engineer 3D CAD design, an expert in high volume manufacturing, and will work closely with our electrical, industrial design, manufacturing, and product teams to help design groundbreaking appliances that seamlessly integrate hardware, software, and cloud services to build transformational user experiences. We are looking for candidates who are creative, energetic team players who excel in a very fast-paced, hands-on environment.

  • Lead our hardware engineering team as they partner with product management, software, and manufacturing teams to review design requirements and review component sources that can meet our volume, quality, and cost requirements and drive technical decisions that are aligned to strategic sourcing goals
  • Able to develop innovative concepts and designs for components, assemblies, and overall device using 3D CAD (CREO/Pro-Engineer). The designs should support high volume manufacturing and meet all of the product requirements
  • Responsible for design and validation of thermoelectric-cooler based refrigeration systems.
  • Research and evaluate components and subsystems based on product development, engineering, and product roadmap requirements
  • Work closely with the heads of engineering and product for roadmap and budget development for the project lifecycle
  • Assists in all facets of the regulatory approvals process, including participating in component and system level design reviews, test plan preparation, and issue resolution
  • Responsible for leading continuous improvement efforts to drive increased product quality based on field-failure data
  • Continuously research and monitor the industry and report on significant activities in the areas of new technologies and new manufacturing techniques
  • Support supplier performance reviews, factory audits and supplier risk assessments
  • Review production designs and execute value engineering activities to achieve product cost reductions, reduce BOM risk and enable long-term manufacturability by proactively identifying and recommending additional component sources

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university

  • Demonstrated analytical problem solving skills
  • Ability to rapidly build prototypes and validate ideas
  • Experience using 6-Sigma methods to understand and resolve quality issues
  • Detailed knowledge of prototype production methods
  • Expert knowledge of high-volume production fabrication methods
  • An ability to balance business and technical objectives in decision-making
